Notable Features of Gukje Market
Largest traditional market
The Gukje market is one of the largest traditional markets in Korea. It was first established by war refugees during Korean War, setting up stalls to make a living.
Different from Jagalchi Market, Gukje market is a dry market where you can find almost everything you need right there, from foods to electronic items, from souvenir to clothing. Even though each alleyway is crowded with shops and stalls, but the market is still well organized by arranging the stalls according to the type of product sold.
Generally the things are not pricey and can be slightly bargain. You can check on more stalls for getting a good price too.
Delicious 'Street' Food
Another interesting part in Gukje Market is the food stalls at Arirang Street. The food stalls are lined in row at the middle of the alley and eaters have their meal on the short stool. These open seating and street dining are unique characteristics of Korean traditional market. The place is clean and safe too, giving eaters a great dining experience.
The food stalls offer delicious Korean food such as japchae (grass noodle), Chungmu Kimbap (plain seaweed rice rolls served with garlic chives, spicy radish, boiled seasoned fishcakes and boiled squid) and sundae (steamed cow intestines stuffed with various ingredient). The dishes are served with kind portion. The prices are also cheaper compared to restaurants.
It is a good stop for tourist, worth strolling around and experiencing local life even not buying.
Bon Vogaye!
