Background of Nami Island
Namiseom or Nami Island (Korean: 남이섬) is a half-moon shaped river island located in Chuncheon, South Korea.
The island formed as the land around it was inundated by the rising water of the North Han River due to the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam in 1944.
The island was named after General Nami, a notable figure in Korean history who courageously fought in battles but died due to false treason accusation at the age of 26, during the reign of King Sejo in Joseon Dynasty. Although his dead body was not discovered in his grave. But there was a belief that if someone took even one stone from there, it would bring misfortune to their house. A tour company had rebuilt the grave with soil and then developed Namiseom into an amusement park.
Years ago, Nami Island declared its cultural independence and became Naminara Republic. The micro-nation has their own national flag, passport, commemorative stamps and currency ‘Nami Tongbo’.
