Features of Jeonju Hyanggyo
Jeonjuhyanggyo was a local Confucian school which established during Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). It was a national educational center for rich young sons of noblemen.
Originally it was located at Gyeonggijeon Shrine site, but unfortunately it was being destroyed during Second Japanese Invasion. Current building is the rebuilt one, retaining the traditional Korean architectural design and being registered as the Korean Historic Treasure No.379.
The main hall, Daeseongjeon is located at the front site of Jeonju Hyanggyo. It is a Confucian Shrine Hall where the mortuary tablets of 7 Chinese Confucian scholars and 18 Korean scholars are enshrined at.
While the main lecture hall, Myeongyundang is located in the rear. In all, there are 99 rooms in the hyanggyo.
There is a protected gingko tree beside of Myeongyundang. The giant tree is 32 meters in height and estimated around 420 years old.
The characteristic of Gingko tree which can repel insects, also symbolizes the virtuous spirit of seonbi. Confucian scholars should lead lives of study and integrity instead of being coveted by wealth and power.
