Notable Features
Cheonggyecheon, also known as Cheonggye Stream, is an 10.84 kilometers long stream that runs through the heart of Seoul, South Korea. The stream flows from the south of Gwanghwamun to Dongdaemun.
Originally it was covered over by a highway in the 1960s as part of the city's modernization efforts. In 2003, Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project was launched to restore the stream into an urban oasis. While Cheonggye Plaza is a public square which built in 2005 as part of the Restoration Project.
The plaza features a modern design that blends traditional Korean elements with contemporary touches. Some of the most notable features of Cheonggye Plaza and Cheonggyecheon are the “Spring” Tower, a shell-shaped sculpture by Swedish pop artist, and the Candlelight Fountain, a 4 m long, two-tiered waterfall that flows into the Cheonggyecheon marking the start of tributary flowing towards the Hangang.
At night, Cheonggye Plaza and Cheonggyecheon are especially stunning when the lights of tower and fountain lit-up .
Visitors to the Cheonggyecheon can enjoy a leisurely walk along the pedestrian walkways that run alongside the stream. Under the beautiful light, the stream definitely is a great place to enjoy some tranquility amid the buzz of the city.
Cheonggyecheon is also home to several cultural and historical landmarks, including the Gwangtong Bridge, the historic busiest stone bridge which built by King Taejong during Joseon Dynasty, and the Palseokdam, a pond which made of stones collected from eight provinces in Korea.
